What is the Internet of Things and how does it relate to building management systems?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a generic term for devices connected to the internet and data sharing. At its most basic, it is the link between your laptop and smartphone to your Wi-Fi. However, in building management systems, there can be many many devices attached to a network, from smart speakers and thermostats to the lighting, fire system and security access controls.

What are the cyber-security risks of a BMS?

As building management systems have become more complex, their interconnectedness has made them more vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Hackers target these systems to hold a business company to ransom for a financial reward, to access other parts of a company’s IT network, to carry out a malicious attack or simply to prove they can.

The problem lies less with the system that is in place, but more the way it is installed, maintained, updated and managed. Systems are less vulnerable if they are kept up-to-date, use strong passwords and a firewall, and access to the BMS itself is carefully managed.
